Compartmentation and why it’s so important

By having an effective fire compartmentation system the spread and travel of fire / heat and smoke is vastly reduced protecting the building, lives and property including the means of escape.

A building should be constructed into divisions or compartments. The compartment should have passive fire systems to uphold the fire barrier of the compartment and reduce the spread of fire and smoke.

If a building has a ‘stay put policy’ it is imperative that the responsible persons have the relevant passive fire protection in place and installed correctly to protect residents in the event of a fire. Many buildings have a ‘stay-put’ as a well designed passive fire solution will provide the required fire barrier and can be safer than evacuation policy.

Compartmentation Surveys are a crucial part of checking the fire safety of your building, as well as other essential checks as part of your building’s fire strategy.
